Gurukul is a system of education in India. In Ancient India this system was very popular. It is related to the quest studies. Gurukul system is an ancient concept of education, where in the participants (Student) get knowledge by residing with his teacher as part of his family. The guru (teacher) was a guide, father and role Model.
Traditionally only the Gurukul system was followed in India. Gurukul was generally established in forests, away from the dean and bustle of the normal life .A Shishya or a student served his guru for years and gained his faith of the guru with his determination, discipline, sincerity and intelligence before he was provided an opportunity to acquire the knowledge of different subjects. The Gurukul system thought student simple living, loyalty to duty and quest for learning.
In Ancient India,. Jainism and Buddhism flourished which had a major impact on educational system. During the Medieval period universities that provide higher education were taxila, nalanda, vikramasila and Ujjain. The Guru shishya tradition (parampara) is followed one in Hinduism and appears in other religious group in india. Such as a jainsm,Buddhism and Sikhism.
A few new Gurukul have been established recently some of them are Ananda Marya Gurukul, Swami Narayan Gurukul and Vivekananda college for many years international society for Krishna consciousness founded many Gurukuls for children providing academic as well as spiritual instructions. The Gurukul system may have become extinct but teacher – student relationship is still same in India. Shantiniketan an educational institution established by Rabinder nath tagore in West Bengal is still run according to the Gurukul system.
